Who We Are:
The Empowerment Through Hip Hop Foundation (formerly known as The Foundation for the
Study of Hiphop Consciousness) is an organization dedicated to using Hip Hop culture as a tool for social change and
youth empowerment. For the past 15 years, its founder has studied, taught, and lectured on Hip Hop culture
and how history, spirituality, politics, and psychosocial conditions have shaped Hip Hop culture. The
Foundation was formed based on this body of work.
The Foundation's immediate goals are as follow:

To use Hip Hop culture as a tool for social change and youth empowerment.

To Promote Conscious Hip Hop. (See Strength in Numbers Network below)

To create a bridge between Rap artists and the youth they influence.
Ultimately, The Foundation's aim is to improve the lives of young people.

The debate over mainstream Rap music's lack of creativity and general negative influence on
the youth is well known. Misogyny, violence, and glamorized crime and drug references seem to be the dominant subject in mainstream
Rap music. The music industry promotes this while ignoring the many conscious, truly creative, and more positive Rap artists
who are as talented as their pop counterparts. It is no mystery that this type of entertainment is promoted and marketed because
it is highly profitable.
Currently, The Foundation is promoting
The Strength in Numbers Network, which is designed
to create a national database of progressive minded, Hip Hop music consumers, that independent and unsigned conscious Hip
Hop artists can use to market themselves with. This will give financial power and creative control back to the artists without
relying on an industry that rarely acts in their best interest . As well, this will give Hip Hop listeners an avenue
to hear about and support Hip Hop artists that aren’t promoted in the mainstream.
