The Foundation for the Study of Hiphop Consciousness
"THE FOUNDATION FOR THE STUDY OF HIPHOP CONSCIOUSNESS BRINGS MUCH NEEDED BALANCE TO THE MAINSTREAM PORTRAYAL OF RAP MUSIC AND HIPHOP CULTURE."

In light of all the negative mainstream press coverage that Rap music and Hiphop Culture often receive, The Foundation for the Study of Hiphop Consciousness was created as a philosophical think tank dedicated to social upliftment and youth empowerment through Hiphop Culture.  For the past 15 years, its founders have studied, taught, and lectured on Hiphop and how history, spirituality, politics, and psychosocial conditions have shaped Hiphop Culture.  The Foundation is formed based on this body of work.

The Foundation's immediate goals are as follow:

1) To empower and educate youths using Hiphop Culture and Rap music as a tool, 2) To promote the Strength in Numbers Campaign designed to pressure mainstream media to market more conscious Rap music, 3) To form a national network of established and up-and-coming conscious and progressive Hiphop artists, and 4) To be the symbol of reason and wisdom amid the current unbalanced global portrayal of Hiphop Culture.

Ultimately, The Foundation's aim is to improve young people's lives and help make Hiphop Culture an intelligent and relevant voice in todays rapidly changing society.

The Foundation for the Study of Hiphop Consciousness spearheads campaign aimed at holding mainstream media accountable for promoting destructive messages and images via Rap music.

The debate over Rap music's negative influence on our youth and the need for media accountability is gaining national momentum as misogyny, violence, and glamorized crime and drug references seem to be the dominant subject in mainstream Rap music.  The music industry carelessly promotes this type of Rap music while ignoring the many conscious and more positive Rap artists who are as talented as their pop counterparts. It is no mystery that this type of entertainment is promoted and marketed because it is highly profitable. Enter The Foundation for the Study of Hiphop Consciousness - a philosophical think tank dedicated to social upliftment through Hiphop Culture.

Currently, The Foundation is spearheading The Strength in Numbers Hiphop Petition Campaign which is designed to gather one million signatures, nationally, to show that there is a market for conscious/progressive Rap music, but also to publicly hold the media accountable for the destructive images and messages that they freely promote in the mainstream.  It is aimed at record companies, urban radio stations, and TV networks that all profit from this particular type of mainstream Rap music. This petition strongly recommends that these industries take into serious consideration the negative effect that some mainstream Rap music has on the youth of this country and abroad.  One of the points to be made is that there are hundreds of conscious and positive artists around this country who have what it takes to be as successful as their current mainstream counterparts.  By fulfilling the demands of the petition, the entertainment industry, as well as society in general, will greatly benefit from the outcome.
